“700+ RIDERS PARTICIPATE IN THE KATHMANDU KORA CYCLING CHALLENGE 2013 AND CYCLE AROUND THE VALLEY FOR A NOBLE CAUSE”
The Kathmandu KORA Cycling Challenge 2013 is now over. But boy, did it garner a lot of attention! With around 700 bikers taking on the challenge, it was definitely the biggest cycling ride we had witnessed in the country. This event clearly showed how we can use a popular sport like cycling as a means to raise awareness and funds for social inequalities in Nepal. The objective of the ride was to bring together cyclists to take on the 50 km challenge, with most of the riders seeking sponsors on their own and raising Rs.100 per km. All donated money this year is going towards building an eco-designed birthing facility in Sharmali, Baitadi.
By 7am in the morning of 20th of July 2013, the meeting point at Patan Durbar Square was crowded with riders raring to go after a power breakfast of an egg and a banana. After the official event T-Shirts and lunch coupon distribution were done, the organizers began briefing the participants with the basic instructions for the ride. The ride was then flagged off by Mr. Lalit Dhami, Health Officer in Charge of Sharmali village in Baitadi. The organizers were thoughtful enough to bombard the registered riders with e-mail notifications before the ride, which contained the Kora Challenge Map, volunteer contact numbers, rules and safety regulations. The race was led by a pack of leader riders, with another pack guiding in the middle and a handful of sweepers who made sure none of the riders were left behind. This year’s event was truly a mix of people from all walks of life and nationality, young to old enthusiastic riders alike. The Kora ended at Mangal Bazaar in Patan and some of the riders continued with the celebrations at the post-event jamming session organized for the riders. The event was planned very well with support from plenty of enthusiastic volunteers who provided support in every way possible.
This successful event has proven that when individuals come together for a genuine cause nothing is impossible. The organizing partner Socialtours are now expecting the total fund from the event to exceed NRs.1.5 million, including the collections at the VDC of Sharmali, Baitadi and by Save the Children. Interestingly, one rider Mr. Udayan Mishra solely managed to raise collections in excess of Nrs. 1,20,000/- and lead the individual fund raising leader board. Though the Kathmandu Kora Challenge has passed, it’s still not too late to pledge. Donations can still be dropped off at the Socialtours office in Tri Devi Marg, Thamel or you can also use their Karma Foundation bank account, and deposit cash, cheque or transfer money. The next round of the Kathmandu Kora Cycling Challenge will take place on 19th of July 2014 and is set to get bigger with the addition of a 100 KM+ trail for international professional MTB riders. So mark your calendars and ride again for another fantastic cause!
